The news this week focused on the fact that the number of homes built in the year to June has increased by 6% to 139,030, latest Government figures reveal. What these headlines don’t actually tell you is that we are actually are around 111,000 homes short a year. This is based on the annual demand needed, according to a number of housing groups. What this means is that we are in effect, 45% off where we need to be.
This is bad news for tenants looking for new properties but underpins the strength of the buy-to-let market for the landlord.
Supply way off the mark… Not enough bricks
Another interesting article from Propertywire, talked about the fact we are not producing the 1.4 billion bricks needed a year to meet demand. Quite worrying that we don’t even have the materials needed, assuming we had the land available to build on.
